2017 Youth Programs:

Mountain Arts for Youth

July & August: programs invite school aged youth to join artists and naturalists for a series of summer arts workshops for kids designed to connect them with the natural world around them. Program Director Lara Applebaum. $5 per participant.All programs meet from 1-4 pm at Porphyry Place in McCarthy, unless otherwise specified.

  • Friday, July 7th: Watercolor Forests - Robin Mayo from the Wrangell Institute for Science and Environment (WISE) will lead us on a nature walk and teach us how to use brushless techniques to create birch and aspen inspired watercolors.  Meets at Porphyry Place from 1-4pm.

  • Monday, July 17th and 24th: Mural Painting - Scientific illustrator Kristin Link, in partnership with the McCarthy-Kennicott Historical Museum, will work with youth to design and paint a kids’ community mural on the local mail shack.  1-4 pm.  Meeting place TBA.

  • Monday, July 31st:  Tile Painting with Alcohol Inks - Artist Naomi Young will guide us through alcohol ink techniques to decorate tiles with vibrant colors.  Participants will also have the opportunity to contribute to a group project that signifies the Wrangell Mountains. All materials provided or bring your own tile that you would like to decorate.  Meets at Porphyry Place from 1-4pm.

  • Monday, August 7th:  Rock Art - Join National Park Service archeologists Lee Reininghaus and Allyson Pease as we learn about one of the oldest forms of human communication.  Participants will explore how ideas can be conveyed through pictures and symbols, discover hidden meanings behind contemporary and ancient rock art, and will then create their own rock art.  Meets at Porphyry Place from 1-4pm.

Program Director Lara Applebaum. $5 per participant. All programs meet from 1-4 pm at Porphyry Place in McCarthy, unless otherwise specified.

  • Monday, July 10th: Wildlife Exploration - Join science teacher Meghan Nedwick for an afternoon of animal discoveries as we learn about the habitats and adaptations of our wild neighbors.  Meets at Porphyry Place from 1-4pm.
  • Monday, July 21st: Plant Tinctures - Explore the many uses of plants with educator Stefanie Tschappat and create your own liquid tinctures to use.   Meets at Porphyry Place from 1-4pm.
  • Friday, July 28th: Blast off!  Creating Rockets for Data Collection - Put the scientific method into action with educator Cynthia Shidner.  Learn about scientific careers, experimental variables, and data collection as we create and launch film canister rockets.   Meets at Porphyry Place from 1-4pm.

  • Wednesday, August 2nd thru Thursday, August 3rd: Geology Camp - Join the Wrangell Institute for Science and the Environment, local guides, and local scientists for a campout along the Root Glacier Trail.  Explore and learn in your surroundings about glaciology and its relationship with the neighboring boreal forest.  For details, fee, and registration information, please email info@wrangells.org

Mountain Arts and Science for Preschoolers

Recommended for ages 2 to 5 with caregiver present.  Participants will be guided through a nature-themed art activity each week and are invited to bring a sack lunch for a group picnic afterwards.  $5 per child.  Meets at Porphyry Place from 11am-12:30pm on the following Wednesdays: 7/12, 7/19, 7/26, 8/2, and 8/9.

  • Wednesday, July 12th: Animal Adventures - Learn about different animals and habitats in our area and create your own animal mask and fort.
  • Wednesday, July 19th: Sunprints - Go on a walk with art teacher Robin Child and find interesting shapes (or bring your own) to silhouette as we use the power of the sun to create our own blueprints.
  • Wednesday, July 26th: Birds and Binoculars - Learn about local birds and make paper towel binoculars to use for bird watching.
  • Wednesday, August 2nd:  Nature Print Prayer Flags - Collect plants, rocks, and wood and then use fabric paint to turn your findings into nature prints on cloth flags.
  • Wednesday, August 9th: Yoga Poses and Paintings - Join us on a nature walk and learn related yoga poses along the way.  Then make a sponge painting of your favorite yoga pose.
